by James Stokoe
I really enjoy Stokoe's work. With his Wonton Soup books, he has crafted a highly creative (and improbable) universe of sensual pleasure - both sexual and gustatory, where the trappings of plot become secondary to improvisational storytelling.
The second volume in this series is slightly wilder than the first, but lacks the tighter plotting. Instead, we are given only the slightest outline of a plot - our two heroes get blitzed on the brains of elder Eltyuktuks in weed form, crash their ship on a strange planet, and go searching for more fuel, which they find in the remains of another crashed ship populated by cloned squid creatures. That's it really.
Along the way, we get some character development of Decon by way of a long story involving Sex-Bears and the evils of big corporations. There is less food in this volume compared to the first, but we do get a lengthy examination of the wonders of eating Pookapples, which carry small civilizations within them, and, when combined with other Pookapples in your stomach, can create either harmonious or militant flavours, depending on how the two civilizations blend.
There is no doubt that Stokoe has a fertile imagination. His pages are over-loaded with information, and almost every makes little noises. This comic is funny and stunningly original. This is a must for fans of King City.
