Holy Smokes

by Dudley Perkins

I feel like this album has to be discussed within the context of other recent releases, all produced by Georgia Anne Muldrow. Ms. One has been on fire this summer, producing lots of funky, enjoyable rhythms. This album is no different.

Dudley does here what Dudley does best. He sings and raps about peace, climate change, and whatever else suits his fancy. He's not a particularly good singer, but that has never stopped him. He's a decent rapper, but he's more Dudley Perkins these days than Declaime.

Most of his best stuff has been produced by Madlib in the past. He has an ability to really bring out the funky side of Perkins, but Muldrow is a nice substitute. In a lot of ways, I feel like she encourages his stranger aspects, and together they are working hard to promote their peaceful message. They share a view point lacking these days, not just in hip-hop, but in popular entertainment of all forms.

My big complaint about this album are the weird interludes and skits, similar to those on the G&D project. Less would be more in this case.
