Written by Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray
Art by Giancarlo Caracuzzo
This took some hunting down, as the hype and positive reviews I saw on this title had me quite interested in reading it, but my two usual stores didn't appear to have any copies in stock.
Having read it, I can see why this book is getting a fair amount of positive attention. It's really good. This first issue is all about setting up the premise, but Palmiotti and Gray do a wonderful job of introducing a large cast of characters, that I want to find out what happens to them.
The book begins with some strange zombie-like guy rowing up to a resort beach, where he collapses, and then starts eating the lifeguard who comes to help him. From there, the rest of the issue is devoted to meeting a diverse group of tourists who board a plane from the US to Aruba, before being force to land on the island where the above scene takes place. End of issue.
This is a mature readers book for sure. There is a ton of swearing and sex, and in terms of zombie books, this is a close cousin to Remender and Dwyer's brilliant "Crawl Space: Xxxombies".
The art on the book is very nice, reminding me of Marian Churchland's recent work on Elephantmen in terms of its style and colour scheme. Caracuzzo has a lot of different people to draw, and he manages to make each an individual.
