Crate Digging: The Antique Black

by The City Slick (Decay and Fluent)

This is an obscure recording that I found after listening to and enjoying Fluent's other collaboration with the rapper Selfish as Uncut Raw

Fluent is a really strong producer, whose work reminds me a lot of Madlib,  for its variety of sample sources, its unpredictability, and its versatility as it moves from classic hip hop influences to more jazzy rhythms.

Joining Fluent is Decay, a decent rapper in his own rights, and a much stronger lyricist than some of the people that Madlib has partnered with (yah, I'm talking about you Percee P).

This is a short and intelligent album with some very nice tracks.  Favourites include 'Until the Sun Comes Up pt. 2', 'Still Hated', 'Help', 'Black Composer', and 'Fuck With Us'.  There are appearances made by Tone Liv, Rhyme Scheme, and Selfish.  This album deserves some attention.  What has Fluent been up to lately?  This guy is fantastic.
