Essex County Vol. 3: The Country Nurse

by Jeff Lemire

I'm really glad to see that Lemire is receiving so much attention lately, with his new Vertigo graphic novel The Nobody coming out this week, and his new series Sweet Tooth debuting soon. Lemire is a unique creator in comics, capable of crafting perfect little stories where pages drip with unspoken thoughts and emotions.

This, the third and final chapter of his Essex County trilogy is a perfect example of him playing to his strengths. This book is mostly about Annie, a nurse in Essex County, who knows the main characters of the first two volumes very well. She tries not to 'meddle', but like many people in positions like hers in small towns, she really believes that she knows what is best for people. This chapter also features a story set in the past, concerning a small back-woods orphanage run by a nun.

This volume ties together all of the Essex County plotlines, and captures the insularity of small-town Ontario. Lemire's art is an aquired taste, but it suits the type of story he tells here. The entire trilogy is a brilliant piece of work, and should be recognized as the masterpiece it is.
