Quantic Presents Tropical Funk Experience

selected by Quantic

Quantic seems to be almost as prolific as Madlib these days, as he puts his name to another collection of music.  This compilation album collects sixteen tracks of "cumbia, salsa, palenque & other funky tropical sounds from 1970s Colombia and Panama," as the back of the packaging tells us.

This is a pretty diverse collection, with some seriously fantastic cuts.  My favourites include 'Soul Cucaracha' by The Soul Fantastics; 'Hiko-Iko' by Little Francisco Greaves; and 'Getting it Together' by Mauricio Smith.

I don't know much about this region and the music from this time period, but I can think of no better musical tour guide than Quantic, who has lived in the region for a number of years.  I highly recommend this disk.
